We here at The Acorn Online don't know the difference between a carburetor and a carbohydrate (and why we've been dipping our French Fries in 10W-40) but we love this site anyway. So think how exciting it must be to someone who actually understands automotives. For fans of the long-running Car Talk radio show, www.CarTalk.com duplicates the subtle insanity and stimulating frivolity of brothers Tom and Ray, who add a sprinkle of human psychology with every automotive question they answer. Their site is rich with extras. Missed a show? Listen here. You can even check out your car's Blue Book value.

Remember the paranoia of the Cold War? Remember those pesky A-bombs? Anybody ever duck and cover? Well, www.cnet.com remembers those wonderful moments too, and seems to take great delight in recreating the Way Things Were. Conelrad (Control of Electromagnetic Radiation) is the spooky acronym for what eventually became the Emergency Broadcast System (640 and 1240 AM on your radio dial). In the event of a nuclear attack, those frequencies were where America would tune to see who was toast and who was not. Conelrad recreates that... shhhhhh! Wait, they're listening!

Just in case you're one of the 17 people left in the world who don't know about www.eBay.com we thought we'd tell you. Find bargains galore even things you didn't know existed and make a bid to own what you find. (You probably already know that eBay's the Internet's largest auction block.) Or choose to buy outright. Half the fun of eBay is simply wandering around, looking at... stuff. Chances are, if it's ever been made, somebody wants to sell it. One of our kids (true story) put a knick-knack up for auction that she hoped would sell between $20-$25. Somebody recognized it as a possibly genuine collectors item, eMailed her (for specific identification characteristics) and she sold it for $650. (See, there are nice people in the world. Many of them are online at this very moment.)
FREE to browse. Simple procedures required to buy or sell items. See their site for details.

Money comes, money goes. But how fast does it go? According to Benjamin Bankes (the porker of discussion) it goes way too fast. Drink a daily bottle of payfer water for 20 years and you've wasted 20+ grand of your hard-earned savings. Average c.c. debt is well over 4 grand. (Most folks spend 1/4 of their income paying off debt. Ouch. So www.feedthepig.com can be a real fiscal eye-opener. You'll find the Pig affiliated with www.360financialliteracy.org a less altruistic site, but as equally revealing. Want to save a few bucks? Or a few thou? Here's the place to start. Was history really this much fun? Well, www.history.com (presented by TV's History Channel) turns potentially forgotten moments into an exciting glimpse of reality. On this particular day, for instance, there occurred a certain gunfight at the O.K. Corral. (Would a shootout at the 'Exceptional Corral' have fared any better?) We also learned about the spooky history of Halloween, the salty history of Cracker Jack and even what happened on our birthdays. (Something big sank. Bummer.) You can check out the History Channel's programming and show schedules, but their game selection is pretty good. They offer a great selection of educational DVD/videos.

Ok, so what important event happened in 1404 A.D.? Yeah, yeah, we all know that Innocent VII became the new Pope and Byzantine Constantine XI was born (...didn't we?), but did we also realize that on Oct. 10, predators arrived on Earth for their feasting ritual on xenomorphs and humans? They did according to Alien Vs. Predator (the motion picture). If you'd like to observe Hollywood's version of history, we suspect www.TheMovieTimeline.com is the place to go. On Dec. 31, 1926, Voldemort (of Harry Potter fame) was born. We thought you'd want to know.

An encyclopedia without borders. Www.Wikipedia.com is a free, collaborative world-wide body of knowledge written and continually updated by thousands of its own readers. 'Wiki' is a Hawaiian word meaning 'free.' At any moment around the world, knowledgable people are continually adding, changing and improving Wikipedia simply because they know the answers. Knowledge is fluid, ever adapting and changing and we think Wikipedia is one of the best single sources of knowledge around.
You can add your knowledge as well. Wikipedia encourages anyone to edit almost any page (although certain scholarly works are locked). If a piece of knowledge can be improved in any way, Wikipedia wants your input. You can't break Wikipedia. Most mistakes accidental or intentional are gone in minutes. (If you or your computer are caught intentionally vandalizing information, you are blocked from their Website for evermore.) But if you're 'in the know' feel free to share your knowledge with the entire world. Wikipedia's the place for you.

Want to kill an hour? Or six? Www.AddictingGames.com offers hundreds of wild, addicting and amazing games, from the mindless (Boneless Girl) to the addictive (Bejeweled) — from the enchantingly cerebral (The Basement) — from the hilarious (Meal or No Meal.) Our twisted favorite is Kitten Cannon. Choose from adventure, puzzle, multi-player, brain-tease, shoot-em-up and strategy games. Most Flash and Javascript games load in seconds (with broadband or DSL) and most are G or PG rated — suitable for the entire family. (Note that certain games, while perhaps not for every taste, can be irreverent or somewhat risque. These games come with Adults Only warnings.) This collection of exceptionally well-designed javascripted games and clever time-killers offers state-of-the-art graphics and the cutting edge in creativity.

We also liked the infuriatingly simply Dodgegems and the simple yet oddly addictive Fish. Wanna be a video star? Or director? Well, so do a thousand other folks, and www.YouTube.com has collected the best (and, occasionally the worst) of what all those creative minds are doing with a camera. Amateur and professional, artistic and insane, brilliant or mundane — YouTube's clips can be cute, cuddly, wild, wacky, clever, and sometimes astounding. (Note, some Adults Only clips are available on this site as well.) We here at The Acorn Online are particularly partial to Running With the Squirrels (59 sec.) — a pretty good indication of the fun things YouTube has to offer. If you think that's a howl, check out Cat Herders. But be careful, you may find yourself wasting an entire day wandering around here.
A note of social awareness: It is possible, on YouTube.com, to search and find footage that may be deemed unsuitable or inappropriate by some — images of war, of famine or poverty or misery. While it is not our intent to deluge you with such data, these realities do exist. For those willing to pursue such venues, please use discretion. The Internet is a medium without borders, without pretense, filters and occasionally without censors. The Acorn Online cannot be responsible for what one chooses to view; we simply remind you that the Internet has the ability to depict life — like it or not — as absolute reality.
